Bulgarian Language

The official language is Bulgarian and the written language is Cyrillic although in populated areas, road signs, names and resorts etc are spelt in Roman alphabet.

Bulgarian languageLike any other European country, Bulgarian people speak a variety of languages and it is not difficult to find somebody who is able to speak English, German, Russian or Spanish. In fact should you wish to visit Bulgaria for a holiday there is no need to be worried about not been able to communicate.

Hotels in Sofia are staffed with people who are more than capable of offering or giving advice and information to tourists who are unable to speak Bulgarian or Russian. English, Spanish and French are all widely spoken. Many tourist information pamphlets are available in English and Spanish in any hotel reception desk, and staff will also arrange a taxi for you and give the driver instructions to where you want to go.

Wherever you are, a tourist resort, or a city like Plovdiv or Stara Zagora you will find people on the streets who are willing to help and give information in English and other languages should you feel lost.

Visitor guides and Bulgarian language dictionaries are however a good idea. One problem to be overcome is that in some towns, information in public offices or transport buildings is still written in Cyrillic for the locals, especially if the town is not a tourist destination. That’s when travel guide books come in really handy.

On visiting resorts, for example Bansko or Sunny Beach, this is not a problem as these towns are far more geared up for the visitor. In Bansko you will find plenty of instructors able to offer information regarding the area and slopes in a variety of languages.
